Customizable Similar Rounds in VDA Benchmarks

What is it?

The Similar Rounds section in the Valuation Data Analytics (VDA) Benchmarks page shows you recent funding rounds from companies comparable to yours, sourced from the Crunchbase database. Previously, this list was generated automatically and could not be changed. Now, you have full control over which companies appear in this comparison — you can add, remove, and reorder entries to build a set of comparables that best reflects your market.

Why did we build this?

Automatic comparisons are a good starting point, but they don't always tell the full story. You may know of a specific competitor or peer that raised a round recently, or you may want to remove companies that aren't truly comparable to yours. Advisors preparing a report for a client often need to curate the comparison set to match the narrative they're presenting. This feature gives you that control while keeping the convenience of automatic Crunchbase data as a starting point.

How does it work?

When you first visit the VDA Benchmarks page, the Similar Rounds table is populated automatically based on your selected filters (industry, stage, and countries). Equidam pulls the most recent equity funding rounds from Crunchbase that match your criteria, typically showing 7–10 companies.

From this starting point, you can customize the table in several ways:

Adding companies

Click the Add Company button below the table to open a dialog with two options:

- Search Crunchbase — Type a company name and Equidam will search the Crunchbase database for matching funding rounds. Results show the company name, round type (e.g., Series A), pre-money valuation, and round date. Click Add to include a round in your table. If a round is already in your list, it will show an "Added" badge instead. You can add multiple companies without closing the dialog.

- Add Manually — If a company isn't in Crunchbase, or you have your own data, you can enter it manually. Fill in the company name, pre-money valuation, investment amount, currency, and round date. You can also optionally specify the industry, stage, and country for additional context. The currency defaults to your company's valuation currency.

Removing companies

Each row has a delete button (×) on the right side. Clicking it removes the company immediately. A minimum of 3 companies is required for the comparison to be meaningful, so the delete button is disabled when you're at 3 entries.

Reordering companies

Use the up (↑) and down (↓) arrow buttons on each row to change the display order. The chart above the table follows the same order you set, so you can arrange companies in whatever way makes the most sense for your analysis.

Your own company

Your company always appears as the last row in the table, marked with a **Your Round** badge. This row cannot be moved, edited, or deleted — it's always there as a reference point.

Auto-save

Every change you make — adding, deleting, or reordering — is saved immediately. There is no save button. If you close the page and come back later, your customized list will be exactly as you left it.

Filters and customization

Once you make any change to the table (add, delete, or reorder), your list becomes "customized" and will no longer update automatically when you change the VDA filters (industry, stage, countries). If you change the filters while your list is customized, you'll see a one-time notification reminding you that your similar rounds won't change with the filters.

Resetting to defaults

If you want to start fresh, click the **Reset to Defaults** link that appears in the header area when your list is customized. This will clear all your changes and re-populate the table with automatic Crunchbase data based on your current filter settings.

Limits

You can have a maximum of 27 companies in the table (plus your own company row). When you reach this limit, the Add Company button is disabled and a message is shown. Remove a company to make room for a new one.

Source labels

Each row shows a source badge:

- Crunchbase — the data was pulled from the Crunchbase database (either automatically or via search)

- Manual — you entered this data yourself

- Your Round — your own company's funding round

PDF Reports

When you generate a PDF report, the Similar Rounds section will use your customized list if you've made changes. The Source column appears in the PDF so readers can see where each data point comes from. If you haven't customized the list, the report uses the automatic Crunchbase data as before.
