Scenarios: naming, access days, switching and deleting

A scenario is a separate company copied from your current one, so it has its own name, its own access days and the same delete rules as any company.

A scenario is a copy of your current company that Equidam saves as a new, separate company in your organisation. You use it to test different inputs without changing the original. Because a scenario is a regular company, it follows the same rules as any other company: it has its own access days, its name locks, and it is switched to and deleted like any company.

How do I create a scenario?

Open the company you want to copy, then:

  1. Click the menu icon in the top-right corner.

  2. Click Add a scenario.

  3. Type a name in the Scenario name field.

  4. Click Create Scenario.

Equidam copies the data and opens the new scenario.

How is a scenario named?

The scenario's company name is your current company name, a hyphen, then the name you typed. For example, "Acme" and "High growth" become "Acme - High growth". The dialog shows this full name before you confirm.

After creation, the Company Name field on the Company page is locked for the scenario, as it is for any company that is not on the free plan. To change it, message us on the chat.

What is copied into a scenario?

Equidam copies the original once, at the moment you create the scenario:

  • questionnaire answers

  • financial projections

  • funding details, such as closed rounds, capital needed and use of funds

  • Advanced Settings, including method weights

  • the latest cap table

The scenario starts with the default logo, no SAFEs or convertible notes, and no saved next-round scenarios in SAFEs & Ownership. Reports you generated for the original stay with the original. After creation, the two companies are independent: changes in one never reach the other.

Does a scenario need its own access days?

Yes, unless your organisation has a licence, a plan that covers every company in the organisation and is used mostly by advisors and accelerators. Access days belong to one company, and a new scenario starts with none, even if the original has days left.

When you open a scenario without access days, Equidam takes you to the account status page instead of the dashboard. The page says the valuation access has expired and offers EXTEND VALUATION ACCESS. Your copied data stays saved while you decide.

For advisors and accelerators on a licence: the licence covers every company in your organisation, so a new scenario is ready to use straight away.

How do scenarios appear in the company switcher and Portfolio?

Scenarios have no separate marker. In the Switch company submenu, companies are sorted by name within each organisation, so a scenario usually appears right after its original. The submenu appears once you have more than one company.

In the Portfolio dashboard, each scenario has its own row. A ticked row counts in every KPI and chart on the page, so untick the scenario's checkbox to keep it out of your portfolio totals. Outside a licensed organisation, the Plan column shows "No Ongoing Valuation" for a scenario with no access days.

How do I delete a scenario?

Delete a scenario from the Portfolio dashboard with the Delete company icon in its row, then confirm. The confirmation warns that the company will not be accessible anymore. If you delete the scenario you are working in, the page reloads and opens another company.

If the scenario has ever had access days, including expired ones, the delete icon shows a message that the company cannot be deleted because a valuation period is connected to it. In a licensed organisation, every new scenario gets an access record when it is created. To remove such a scenario, contact us on the chat.

Limits

  • Add a scenario only appears when the company you are in has active access. Companies on the free plan cannot create scenarios.

  • The name you type is required and limited to 100 characters. Names with accents or non-Latin characters reach the limit sooner.

  • The menu entries for scenarios and switching companies are hidden on phone-sized screens.

  • A scenario cannot be reset to the original, merged back, or compared side by side in one view. To start again, create a new scenario from the original.

  • You cannot delete your only company, so the delete icon does not appear when you have only one company.

  • If creation fails, a message asks you to try again and you stay in the original company.

Common questions

Does editing a scenario change my original company?

No. The scenario is a separate company, and the copy happens once at creation. Edits in either company stay in that company.

Why does my new scenario say its access has expired?

Outside a licensed organisation, a new scenario starts with no access days, so buy access for it from the account status page.

Can I create a scenario from a scenario?

Yes, if that scenario has active access. The new name adds your text to the scenario's full name, for example "Acme - High growth - Lower margins".
