You can fill in your financial projections and balance sheet from an Excel file instead of typing each value. The Excel import reads the numbers once and copies them into Equidam. It keeps no link to your file afterwards, so a value that is missing after the import stays missing until you type it in the Financials tab or import a corrected file.
Where do I import financials from Excel?
There are two entry points, and both read the same financials layout.
In the Financials tab, select the spreadsheet icon in the toolbar. Its tooltip reads Import financials from Excel. This imports financial projections and the balance sheet only.
In the top menu, select Import Data. This page takes one workbook that can also hold questionnaire answers, funding details and company profile data, each on its own sheet.
On the Import Data page, Download empty template gives you the file Equidam_Inputs_Template.xlsx. Its financials sheet is named "Equidam Financials Input".
How should the file be laid out?
The import finds your numbers by their labels, so keep the template's layout.
Save the file as .xlsx.
If the workbook has more than one sheet, the financials must be on a sheet whose name contains "Equidam Financials Input". Import Data reads financials only from a sheet whose name contains it, even in a one-sheet workbook.
One row must contain a cell reading "Comments". In that row, label the year columns "Current or Previous Year", then "Year 1", "Year 2" and so on. Past years go in columns labelled "Past Year 2", "Past Year 1" and so on, placed before the current year, with the most recent year last.
Each row label sits in column B and must match the template word for word, for example "Revenue", "Costs of Goods Sold" or "Salaries".
Balance sheet values are read from the "Current or Previous Year" column.
Why are some values missing after the import?
The import skips anything it cannot match, without an error. A row whose label differs from the template, even slightly, is ignored. A cell holding text is read as 0, and so is a dash. Numbers in brackets, such as (5,000), are read as negative. Decimals are rounded to whole numbers.
What does the import replace?
From the Financials tab, the dialog shows a preview, then warns that the import will replace your projections and balance sheet numbers. After you select Import, the table shows the imported values and Input Level switches to Advanced. Nothing is saved until you select Save financials.
From Import Data, the data is saved as soon as you select Yes, Import Data. It replaces the data for each sheet found in the file, and the confirmation screen states that this cannot be undone. Blank questionnaire cells do not overwrite your existing answers. If any sheet has an error, nothing is imported.
Why is my Excel file not kept?
Equidam imports the values, not the file. When you use Import Data, the file is read but not stored; Equidam records only its file name with the import. When you import from the Financials tab, a copy of a file that was read successfully is stored for Equidam's internal records. It is not linked to your financials and you cannot open it in the app. A file that fails to import is deleted.
There is no option to reopen, rerun or edit a past import. To fill a gap, edit the value in the Financials tab, or correct the file and import it again, which replaces the earlier values.
Limits
File type: .xlsx only.
File size: 10 MB. A file that expands to more than 50 MB, or contains more than 1,000 internal entries, is rejected.
Prerequisite: the company's first estimate must be complete.
Plans: Import Data is available on every plan, including the free plan and expired paid accounts. Guest users cannot use it. The financials upload from the Financials tab has no separate plan check.
Import Data also requires a Revenue row, at least 4 year columns including the current year, no negative costs, and at least one final-year cost above zero.
Failure: the Financials tab shows "Import failed" with the reason, for example "Equidam sheet not found" or "Comments column not found". Import Data lists each error by sheet.
Common questions
Can I import an .xls or .csv file?
No. Please open the file in Excel or Google Sheets and save it as .xlsx first.
Can Equidam finish my import from the file I uploaded?
No. The import copies values once and keeps no working link to the file. Enter the missing values in the Financials tab, or fix the file and import it again.
Can I undo an import?
From the Financials tab, the import is not saved until you select Save financials. An import from Import Data cannot be undone.
Why does the import say "Equidam sheet not found"?
This message comes from the import in the Financials tab. Your workbook has more than one sheet and none of their names contains "Equidam Financials Input". Rename the sheet that holds your financials, or download the template again.
