Document Upload: what to upload and what we extract

Upload a pitch deck, business plan or financials as PDF, Word, PowerPoint or Markdown, and we pre-fill your company profile and questionnaire.

Written by Daniel

Document Upload reads documents you already have and builds your first valuation from them. You pick it on the Upload your documents card, which sits first with a Recommended badge. Everything it extracts is yours to review and change.

Where do I find Document Upload?

You choose an onboarding path on the "How would you like to value this company?" screen, at signup and whenever you add a company. The other card is Let us search the web, or AI Discovery. The drop zone links to "Answer 10 questions instead"; the error screen offers "Answer questions instead".

Which files can I upload?

PDF, Word (.doc, .docx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), rich text (.rtf), CSV (.csv) and OpenDocument (.odt, .odp). Drag them onto the drop zone or use Browse files, then Analyse my document.

  • Up to 5 files in one upload.

  • 25 MB per file, 50 MB across all files together.

  • Empty files are rejected.

  • Up to 3 uploads at once, and 20 per day across Document Upload and AI Discovery.

  • The file type is read from the contents, not the name, so a renamed image is rejected.

Which documents work best, and which come back?

A pitch deck, a business plan or a company overview: anything that explains what the company does. Add financial statements or projections too; a projection we read confidently is used instead of our estimate.

Two kinds of file come back with guidance instead. A scan or photo gives us no text, because we do not run OCR; the screen asks for "a text-based PDF (one where you can select the text) or a Word document instead". A file that is only numbers comes back with "This file is mostly financials, and a valuation also needs to know what your company does." Numbers alone leave the engine on industry defaults. The check reads your whole upload as one text, so a financial model sent with a pitch deck goes through.

No document to hand? Open No document handy? Get a prompt for your AI, paste it into any AI assistant and upload the reply as a .md file.

What do we extract, and can I change it?

Three things: your company profile (name, website, country, founding year, founders, employees, industry, development stage), the questionnaire (37 fields across team, product, IP, market, funding and strategy) and a four-year revenue projection. Your founders also go into the cap table.

You then land on "Here's what we found", an editable recap of those fields. Correct anything wrong and press Continue: your edits are saved and the valuation is recomputed. In the Questionnaire, each filled answer carries a Pre-filled by AI badge and a Confirm button.

The AI proposes answers. It does not set your valuation. That comes from the five methods (Scorecard, Checklist, VC method, DCF with long-term growth, DCF with multiples) applied to the data you confirm, so changing an input changes the outcome.

How long does it take, and what if it fails?

Processing can take a couple of minutes, with the steps ticking off as they go. You need not watch: Notify me when done sends a browser notification and Email me when it's ready sends a mail titled "Your valuation of [company] is ready". Only finished runs send it.

If an attempt runs past the time limit it fails and you see "Something went wrong" with Try again. The two content problems above are never retried: a second read returns the same text.

What are the limits, and what happens to my files?

  • Document Upload is part of free plan onboarding: no cost, no card. It stays available after you upgrade if your organisation started on the free plan; organisations that never did add companies through the paid flow.

  • Your files are saved in a folder for your company and are not deleted after processing.

  • We extract the text from each file and send it, up to 50,000 characters, to a third-party AI language model provider to be read, under Equidam's data processing terms. The drop zone says so: "Your documents will be shared with AI language model providers for processing." For the current list of providers, see Is my data safe?.

  • Rather not share documents? Use the "answer 10 questions manually" link; nothing is uploaded on that path.

Common questions

Do you keep my files afterwards?

Yes. They are saved in a folder for your company and nothing deletes them after processing.

What if the extraction got something wrong?

Fix it on the "Here's what we found" recap and press Continue, which recomputes the valuation. Anything you miss can be changed later in the Questionnaire and Financials tabs.

Why was my financial model sent back?

Because it has no description of the business. Upload it again with a pitch deck, a business plan or a short company description, or generate one with the AI prompt under the drop zone.

Does Document Upload decide my valuation?

No. It fills in answers for you to confirm. The valuation comes from the five methods applied to that confirmed data, and the report shows each method and its weight.
