History tab: reviewing and restoring an earlier company version

The History tab lists saved changes to a company, who made them and when, and restores an earlier version without deleting later ones.

The History tab, the last item in the sidebar, lists the changes saved to a company: which area changed, who saved it and when. You can restore the company to an earlier entry, for example after someone overwrote your financial projections by mistake. A restore never removes history entries. It saves your current state as an Auto-save entry first, then adds a new version on top. Guests can view History but cannot restore.

What the History tab records

History adds an entry each time someone saves one of these areas. The badge in the Area column names it:

  • Questionnaire: questionnaire answers.

  • Financials: financial projections.

  • Company Info: company information.

  • Funding: your current round and capital needed.

  • Shareholders: the cap table in Current Shareholders on SAFEs & Ownership, including a cap table brought in by Excel import.

  • Advanced: Advanced Settings, such as method weights.

  • Multiples: your selection on Advanced Multiples.

  • Competitors: adding or removing competitors, including through Excel import.

Each row shows the date and time in your own time zone, a short summary under Change, and the person's name under User. Use the filter, set to All changes by default, to show one area. The page loads 20 entries at a time, and Load more shows older ones.

Three other entry types appear only under All changes: Baseline ("History tracking started", by System), Auto-save ("Auto-saved before restore") and Restore, which every restore adds.

What History does not record

  • SAFEs and convertible notes (a convertible note is a loan that turns into shares later), and next-round scenarios on SAFEs & Ownership. A restore does not change them.

  • Report generation.

  • Changes saved before History was added to Equidam. The Baseline entry, created the first time anyone opens History for the company, records the company as it was then, and you cannot restore to it.

  • A deleted company. History lives inside the company, so it cannot bring a deleted company back.

How to restore an earlier version

  1. Open History in the sidebar.

  2. Find the entry and click Restore in the Action column.

  3. In the Restore to this point? dialog, click Restore.

The message "Company restored. Your previous state has been saved in history." confirms it. The list reloads with an Auto-save entry holding your state from just before, and a Restore entry reading "Restored to state from" followed by the entry's date and time in UTC.

What a restore brings back

A restore copies all the company data stored with that entry into a new version: questionnaire answers, financial projections, company information, funding data and method weights. Restoring a Financials entry also returns your questionnaire answers to how they were at that moment.

Entries labelled Shareholders, Advanced, Multiples, Competitors and Restore also hold a copy of the cap table, competitors, detailed Advanced Settings and the Advanced Multiples selection. Restoring one replaces the current versions with that copy. Questionnaire, Financials, Company Info and Funding entries do not hold that copy. Restoring one of them leaves your current cap table, competitors, advanced settings detail and multiples selection as they are.

After the restore, the dashboard recalculates the valuation from the restored data.

Who can see and restore History

Anyone with access to the company can open History. Admins and Members can restore. Guests can view the list, but a restore by a Guest is refused and the page shows "Failed to restore. Please try again."

History is available on the free plan and on paid plans. It opens once the 10-question estimate is complete.

Limits

  • Entries do not expire, and a restore never removes entries.

  • An undo is a restore like any other, so it returns the cap table, competitors and multiples only from a Shareholders, Competitors, Advanced, Multiples or Restore entry.

  • Baseline and Auto-save entries have no Restore button.

  • If a restore fails, nothing changes and the page shows "Failed to restore. Please try again."

  • If recording an entry fails, your save still goes through, so a save can occasionally be missing from the list.

  • A scenario is a separate company with its own History. Entries from the original company are not copied to it.

Common questions

Does restoring delete the changes made after that point?

No. Every later entry stays in the list, and you can restore any of them. Restoring an entry that holds a copy of the cap table, competitors or multiples replaces the current ones with that copy.

Can I undo a restore?

Yes, restore the entry directly below Auto-save, which is the last change saved before the restore. An undo fully returns questionnaire answers, financial projections, company information, funding data and method weights, but returns the cap table, competitors and multiples only if that entry is a Shareholders, Competitors, Advanced, Multiples or Restore entry.

Why does the User column say System?

The Baseline entry is created automatically, so it shows System. An entry also shows System when the account that saved it no longer exists.

Can History recover a company I deleted?

No. Deleting a company removes access to it, including its History.
